“I look forward to building on the success that the Las Cruces Convention Center has already achieved,” Vallez Duffy said, “while also seeking fresh ways for us to grow.”

Vallez Duffy accepted her new role as the convention center, 680 E. University Ave., begins a major expansion.

The $5 million project broke ground Wednesday and is expected to take approximately 12 months and add 17,000 square-feet of meeting space, including additions to the exhibition hall, new breakout meeting rooms, additional space in the lobby and reception area, and more support space. The expansion is expected to be complete by summer 2019.

“We’ll have 30 percent more meeting space, which is going to create significant opportunities for the convention center,” Vallez Duffy said. “I’m privileged to take the reins at such an important moment in time.”

Vallez Duffy has worked in the New Mexico Hospitality industry since 1996. She has held various positions in catering, group sales, sales database management, event services, and guestroom distribution. Vallez Duffy’s new position combines her skills, experience and passion for the hospitality industry.

Shura Garnett, CFE, Spectra Division Senior Vice President, said: “Shannon brings diverse and extensive hospitality experience to the Las Cruces Convention Center, a facility she’s championed leading up to its construction.”

Vallez Duffy grew up in Belen and graduated from New Mexico State University with a Bachelor of Science in hospitality and tourism management. She has spent the majority of her career serving the hospitality and tourism industry of New Mexico.
